Tallyanche Hooman | Learn how to make Goan Sardine Curry

Tallyanche Hooman is a traditional Goan Sardine Curry. One of my aunts is from Goa and she taught me this lip-smacking curry. If you are in Goa and you miss this curry then you have missed something very delicious. Let us now learn how to make this  curry:


  • 10-12 Medium size Sardines(Talle) , nicely cleaned
  • 1 1/2 Cup Freshly grated or dry coconut
  • 12-15 Byadgi Red Chilies
  • 2 Teaspoons turmeric Powder
  • 1 Cup water
  • 12-15 Byadgi Red Chilies
  • 10-15 Kokum
  • 20-25 Tefla/ Sichuan Pepper
  • Salt to taste

 How to make Tallyanche Hooman :

  1. Cut off the tail, scales and wash them 3 times.
  2. Sprinkle some salt, a teaspoon of turmeric powder and spread them on the fish and keep aside for about 30 minutes.
  3. Take a mixer and grind together grated coconut, red chillies and a teaspoon of turmeric powder and make a smooth paste with a cup of water.
  4. Take a thick bottomed vessel and add the prepared paste and keep it on high heat and boil.
  5. Now, add sardines and cook them on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
  6. Crush the pepper or Tefla slightly to release the flavours.
  7. On a low flame heat on low and add crushed sichuan pepper, kokum and cook it for 5 more minutes.
  8. Add 2-3 slit green chillies.
  9. Remove from heat.
  10. It goes well with Rice, Dosa, Chapathi, etc. Try this on this weekend and let me know how it really tasted!
