Rasam Recipe | South Indian Rasam

Rasam is a very spicy South Indian soup, prepared using tamarind juice, with the addition of tomato, chili, pepper, cumin and other spices. It is served with rice.

Ingredients 

Rasam powder ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 
  • 1/2 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 10 methi seeds 
  • 3 red chili 
  • Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper 

Rasam ingredients

  • 1 tomato finely chopped
  • 2 green chili
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 cup tamarind juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder 
  • 1/2 tablespoon jaggery
  • salt 
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup toor dal cooked
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon  oil
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds 
  • 1/2 tablespoon urad dal
  • 2 red chili broken
  • pinch hing

Instruction to make South Indian Rasam

  1. First, add oil and roast coriander seeds, cumin seeds, methi seeds, red chili, pepper and curry leaves.
  2. Now blend the mixture into fine powder.
  3. In a pan add tomatoes and green chili.
  4. Also add tamarind juice, turmeric powder, jaggery and salt. Cover with lid and boil for 15 minutes.
  5. add water and boil again.
  6. Add cooked dal and mix well.
  7. Now add prepared rasam powder, mix well and continue to boil for 2 minutes.
  8. Take another pan heat oil, add mustard, urad dal, dried red chili, curry leaves and hing.
  9. Pour this mixture into the rasam.
  10. At last add coriander leaves and serve rasam with rice and papad.
