Konju Varutharacha Curry | Kerala prawn curry | Indian cuisine

Konju Varutharacha Curry is Kerala Prawn Curry which is very tasty and full of aromatic spices.


  • For Marination:
  • medium sized prawns
  • Salt to taste
  • turmeric powder
  • For Varutharacha paste:
  • grated coconut
  • coriander seeds
  • red chillies
  • chopped garlic
  • shallots
  • cup water
  • For the preparation:
  • coconut oil ( you can use vegetable oil )
  • fenugreek seeds
  • sliced ginger
  • curry leaves
  • chopped onion
  • water
  • tamarind paste/pulp
  • salt to taste

Konju varutharacha curry Process

  1. mix prawns with salt and turmeric, keep for half an hour.
  2. For preparing the varutharacha paste:
  3. Roast coriander seeds, coconut, red chillies, garlic and shallots.
  4. Wait for the shallots turn brown.
  5. Add water some and grind to a fine paste.
  6. Heat coconut oil or the oil you are using for cooking in a pan and add fenugreek seeds.
  7. then add curry leaves, ginger,  and onions.
  8. Fry the onion till onions turn brown.
  9. Add varutharacha paste that you prepared, water and tamarind pulp and salt.
  10. Add prawns and cook well.
  11. Once the prawns are cooked, temper with coconut oil,  red chilli, shallots and dry mustard seeds.
  12. Serve the prawn curry hot with appam or rice.
