Bengali Dhokar Dalna Veg Recipe is a cake made from two kinds of dal. It is a unique recipe of West Bengal.  It’s a mix of chana dal and a little paste of dried white peas tastes delicious and quite different. Ingredients:

Bengal gram/chana dal/cholar dal – 2 cups

dried peas/matar dal – 1 cup

cumin powder – 1 tsp

coriander powder – 1 tsp

chili powder – 1 tsp

turmeric powder – ½ tsp

ginger paste – 1 tbsp

sugar -1 tbsp

Salt to taste

mustard oil (or vegetable oil) – 3 tbsp

asafoetida – 1 tsp

onion seeds – ½ tsp

green chillies, finely chopped – 4-6

oil for deep frying

For the sauce

mustard or vegetable oil – 3 tbsp

bay leaves – 1-2

cardamoms – 3-4 whole

ginger paste – 1 tsp

green chillies, slit – 2

tomatoes, puréed – 8 large

cumin powder – 1 tbsp

coriander powder – 1 tbsp

chilli powder – 1 tsp

turmeric powder – ½ tsp

sugar – 1 tsp

salt to taste

garam masala powder (optional) – ½ tsp

Bengali Dhokar Dalna Veg Recipe Procedure:

To make the lentil cakes

  1. Take a bowl and mix two types of dal and soak in water overnight.
  2. The next day, drain the water and grind the dals/lentils into a smooth paste.
  3. Take a mixing bowl and transfer the paste into it and add coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, ginger paste, salt and sugar and mix well.
  4. Take a thick bottomed pan and heat oil in it.
  5. To this add asafoetida, onion seeds, and green chillies.
  6. Let them start splutter, now add the dal paste.
  7. Cook it over medium heat and keep stirring it continuously until all the water evaporates.
  8. Once this thickens and become sticky together and comes off from the side of the pan.
  9. Now from the pan and spread over a greased plate and flatten it and let it cool.
  10. Now, deep fry the lentil cakes to golden brown

Sauce

  1. Take a pan and heat oil in it.
  2. To temper add bay leaves, cardamoms, ginger paste, and green chillies.
  3. Add the tomato puree and cook for 10-12 minutes.
  4. Now, add cumin powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and sugar.
  5. Let it cook for 10-15 more minutes till the oil separates.
  6. Once done add fried lentil cakes and stir gently.
